    Position Title: Irwin Belk Endowed Associate Professorship

    Position title – Tenure-track faculty Position in Neuroscience - Biology of Aging and Neurodegeneration.

    The Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program , the Aging Studies, and BioInspired Institutes at Syracuse University is pleased to announce the availability of two tenure-track positions in the dynamic and broad field of neuroscience. These positions are part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University is actively recruiting multiple candidates for faculty positions for a cohesive research cluster in the focus area of Neuroscience and Aging. We invite accomplished candidates to join our collaborative community of scientists and contribute to a multidisciplinary research cluster focused on advancing our understanding of the biology of aging, with a specific emphasis on neurodegenerative disease.

     

    Faculty hired into these positions will build on existing strengths in cell and molecular neurobiology, behavioral and systems neuroscience, neurological disease modeling, neuropharmacology and toxicology, developmental neurobiology, and astrocyte biology and will establish their research labs in the world-class Life Sciences Complex. The successful candidates are expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program and show dedication to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field with a strong research focus on the biology of aging as it pertains to neurodegenerative disease.

     

    The research environment at Syracuse University is highly collaborative both within and between departments, research centers, and institutes as well as the adjacent Upstate Medical University. The Biology Department at Syracuse University currently has 30 full-time faculty with research strengths in neurobiology, cell, developmental and evolutionary biology, and plant and ecosystem ecology.The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program brings together students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty across multiple colleges and academic units for the purposes of fostering neuroscience education and research to promote interdisciplinary training. The Aging Studies Institute is an all-university institute that coordinates and promotes aging-related research, training, and knowledge dissemination, while BioInspired at Syracuse brings together faculty specializing in the mechanics of living tissues to provide proof of concept for new approaches to understanding and treating developmental anomalies and disease .

    Position title – Tenure-track faculty in Neuroscience (open rank)

    The College of Science and Mathematics at Augusta University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Neuroscience to begin in Fall 2024 at a rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor as commensurate with experience.  In Fall 2023 the College initiated a new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience to complement a University-wide research initiative in this area, the Transdisciplinary Research Initiative in Inflammaging and Brain Aging (TRIBA, https://www.augusta.edu/research/triba/) and an existing PhD program in Neuroscience. A candidate qualified to serve at the level of professor or associate professor may be interested in taking on additional duties as the Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience.  The successful candidate must have a doctorate in neuroscience or a closely related field; postdoctoral research experience; and a publication record commensurate with their career stage.  Candidates for Associate Professor or Professor should have a distinguished record of teaching and research to include extramural funding.  The field of research within neuroscience is open with an expectation that candidates will establish a vibrant and fundable research program that demonstrates originality in addressing significant questions.  Successful applicants will have a commitment to teaching and mentoring students.

    Augusta University is one of four designated research universities in the University System of Georgia and the state’s only public academic medical center, offering 155 academic programs from bachelor’s to doctoral. Augusta, Georgia is the cultural center of the region, site of the Masters Golf Tournament, and home of the Georgia Cyber Center, and is within easy driving distance of Atlantic beaches and Blue Ridge mountains. The university is located near Fort Eisenhower, home of the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps, Cyber Center of Excellence, Cyber Command, and NSA-Georgia. The Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and Savannah River National Laboratory are nearby.

A build-out of the top floor of the Science and Mathematics building, completed in Fall 2023, provides 28,765 square feet of research laboratories and support spaces. University support for research includes a dedicated research MRI and numerous core facilities for imaging, biomedical and chemical analysis, statistical analysis, small animal behavior, and high performance computing.

    Position title: Postdoctoral Scholar/Staff Scientist Position Available in a Multiple Sclerosis Research

    A Postdoctoral scholar/Staff Scientist position with competitive salaries and benefits are available immediately in Dr. Tiwari-Woodruff Lab at the School of Medicine, University of California, Riverside. The primary focus of our research is understanding demyelination and neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS). The lab is actively investigating therapeutic agents that have immunomodulatory and remyelinating properties to induce recovery and repair. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to investigate mitochondria changes in Purkinje neurons and circuitry of demyelinating cerebellum using both postmortem human cerebellar tissue from MS patients and mouse models of MS. We have established transgenic mouse colonies with tagged mitochondria and Purkinje cells. Ability to perform brain slice electrophysiology (patch clamp and field potentials), and/or neuropathology and immunology is required.

    Tiwari-Woodruff lab uses animal models, immunology, electrophysiology, behavior, molecular biology, and biochemistry approaches. Candidates should have a doctoral degree in neuroscience, immunology, biochemistry, physiology, or a related field with a background in electrophysiology.     Position title: Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate

    The Coutinho-Budd lab (coutinhobuddlab.com) at the University of Virginia Department of Neuroscience and the Center of Brain Immunology and Glia is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate for an NIH-funded position. 

    Our lab is interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of glial biology. Glia are critical components of the nervous system—almost everything that neurons do requires glial support.  Significant progress has been made in understanding neuron-glia interactions at synapses and axons, but my lab aims to define what glia do at neuronal cell bodies using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system.  We seek to understand how these glial cells interact with both neurons and neighboring glial cells, and to unravel their roles in the healthy nervous system and disease with a number of projects spanning from development to neurodegeneraton.

    Candidates should have the ability to work creatively and independently in the development and execution of research projects, demonstrate a track record of planning, performing, and publishing original research, and possess effective oral and written communication skills. Previous experiences in cell biology, neuroscience, or genetics is preferred, though prior experience with Drosophila is not required.

    Position title: Lab and Research Technician 2

    The Coutinho-Budd lab (coutinhobuddlab.com) at the University of Virginia Department of Neuroscience and the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia is seeking an enthusiastic laboratory technician (Lab and Research Technician II) to perform and assist with research projects and laboratory management.

    The Technician will be responsible for assisting in research related to cellular and molecular mechanisms of glial biology in Drosophila melanogaster.  We are particularly interested in understanding molecular mechanisms underlying glial function and interactions with nearby neurons and glia in the healthy and diseased nervous system.  Our research involves a number of techniques and approaches in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics, including the use of genetically-modified animals combined with brain microdissection, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, PCR and other DNA preparation, Western blots, data analysis, and other techniques as needed.  Additional responsibilities include ordering lab supplies, maintaining Drosophila stocks and lab equipment, and helping to train undergraduate students.  The position includes opportunities that will result in authorship on academic publications, and the potential to attend and present your work at scientific conferences.

    Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience or related field, and prior research experience in cell and molecular biology. Previous research with Drosophila is encouraged, but not required.

    Position title: Post-doctoral 

    Organization: Laboratory Dr. Bieberich, Department of Physiology, University of Kentucky

    Location: Lexington, KY, USA

    The initial focus of the postdoctoral scientist will be exciting NIH-funded projects examining function of lipids, particularly the sphingolipid ceramide, in neural development and neurodegeneration.  We have long-term funding and immediate openings related to projects on the function of sphingolipids, specifically ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate, in cell signaling for neural development and disease. Particularly, we are interested in the role of ceramide for extracellular vesicle-mediated neurodegeneration and sphingosine-1-phosphate-mediated activation of glia in Alzheimer’s disease. We use integrative omics approaches to identify candidate cell signaling factors regulated by sphingolipids as well as mechanism-driven targeted approaches applying cutting edge molecular biology, imaging, and spectrometric techniques in unique transgenic animal models and cell culture, including human iPS cells.

    A successful candidate will bring specific skills and knowledge critical to the lab’s research focus. These skills include, but are not limited to, experience with rodent colony handling and experiments, molecular biology and cell culture techniques. Experience in neuroscience-related research areas is desired. Experience in lipid biochemistry is preferred, but not critical. It is expected that a successful candidate has a substantial level of independence to write manuscripts and help develop grant applications with minimal supervision.

    The successful candidate will benefit from a highly-stimulating and collaborative research environment in addition to an organized training plan to propel their future career goals. There are ample opportunities for scientific growth, career enhancement, and development into an independent investigator in academia, industry, or other career paths. Although the projects are currently funded by NIH, an integral part of post-doctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application, so Post-Docs are encouraged to apply for external funding when possible.     The Neuroscience Program in the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University seeks candidates for a non-tenure-track teaching professor to begin fall of 2023. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate and graduate level classes in our interdisciplinary neuroscience program. In addition to a 3+2 teaching load, the successful applicant will provide input into curricular and co-curricular programing, contribute to student recruitment, student advising and program management. This is a full-time 8.5-month faculty position with an initial renewable contract of three years with an appointment in the Department of Biology. Additional remuneration, paid as one month of summer salary, is possible for duties related to program management for highly qualified applicants who are deemed able to fulfill those responsibilities. Teaching professors of all ranks are full members of the departmental and university community and are eligible to vote on Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences, and university matters of shared governance except for those pertaining to the hiring and promotion of tenure-track faculty.

    The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience program offers an integrated learning major (ILM) in Neuroscience to undergraduates as well as neuroscience graduate concentration. Thirty-five faculty members from nine departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the David B. Falk College of Sports and Human Dynamics, and the College of Engineering and Computer Science are neuroscience faculty affiliates https://thecollege.syr.edu/neuroscience/people/ . Undergraduate neuroscience ILM students currently number 250. The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Concentration Program currently has 13 students who are admitted into the department of a traditional discipline and then complete coursework interdisciplinary to neuroscience.

    Qualifications:

    Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience or closely related field required. Relevant prior teaching experience is required.

    Job Specific Qualifications:

    The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students, as well as fostering a climate of inclusion. The program is interested in candidates who have developed effective teaching strategies for the educational advancement of students from groups underrepresented in higher education or in neuroscience. The successful candidate will teach courses that could include but are not limited to: Neuroanatomy; Introduction to Neuroscience; Neurobiology of Disease; and Brain and Behavior. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to develop upper division neuroscience electives appropriate to her/his expertise and the needs of the Neuroscience Program.

    Position title: Post-Doctoral Associate

    Organization: Laboratory of Dr Douglas Feinstein, University of Illinois

    Location: Chicago, Illinois

    This Post-Doctoral Associate will conduct research on studies to induce remyelination in a mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the laboratory of Dr Douglas Feinstein at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with Dr. Feinstein and other laboratory members to design, perform, and analyze experiments using in vitro and in vivo experimental approaches. This project involves causing loss of myelin in the CNS by treating mice with the demyelinating agent Cuprizone (CPZ). Following treatment, mice will be administered Lanthionine Ketimine Ester (LKE) which we showed induces remyelination (see Dupree et al. (2022) ASN NEURO). The postdoctoral researcher will perform studies to optimize the timing and dosage of LKE, and will test if remyelination is maintained after LKE is halted. Assays will include immunocytochemistry (ICC), qPCR, and electron microscopy. In vitro studies will be done using primary cultures of oligodendrocytes (OLGs), to screen newer LKE derivatives for higher potency, and will include assays for markers of survival and maturation using qPCR and IHC. The post doctoral associate will examine the role of the protein CRMP2, a target of LKE, using the Cre-Lox approach to generate mice with conditional knockout of CRMP2 from OLGs; and pharmacokinetic analyses to measure LKE accumulation in tissue. The post doctoral associate will carry out behavior studies to determine if LKE reduces deficits due to the loss of myelin.

    The candidate should have previous experience working with mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate should also have experience with some or all of the above methods including transcardial perfusion of mice, IHC, RNA isolation and qPCR, mouse genotyping, primary cell culture, and behavior analyses including open field testing, novel object recognition, and rotarod.

    The studies are supported by a VA Merit grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and funds are available for up to 3 years. The salary level will follow current NIH recommendations based on number of years of previous post-doctoral experience.
