Information to Applicants for Membership

Membership applications are reviewed throughout the year.  Applicants that are approved by Council will be eligible to submit abstracts for the Annual ASN meeting.

The Society has three membership classes: Ordinary, Corresponding and Emeritus members. These categories are defined by the membership committee on the basis of the following criteria:

Ordinary Members: Ordinary members shall be investigators in the field of neurochemistry or related fields that reside in the Western Hemisphere. Ordinary members include independent investigators, students and postdoctoral fellows.

Corresponding members: are investigators in the field of neurochemistry who have contributed meritorious original work to the field, but are not residents of the Western Hemisphere. All other guidelines for election to corresponding membership are equivalent to those for ordinary membership.

Emeritus Members: Emeritus members of the Society are members who have retired from their professional duties and who have chosen to be classified as emeritus status. Emeritus status can be obtained by notifying the Secretary of retirement, in writing, with a request for reclassification. Emeritus members shall have all the rights and privileges of the membership class from which they transferred.

Dues, at present, are $125.00 per year for ordinary members and $75 for corresponding members. Emeritus membership dues are complimentary. Student and Postdocs are considered Ordinary members. Dues for students are $30.00 per year and for postdoctoral members are $50.00 per year. Three years post Ph.D. the membership dues increase to the postdoctoral rate  of $50.00. In addition, there is a $5.00 incorporation fee to be added to the first payment. New members are billed for dues and fees after being elected to membership. ASN members may subscribe to the Journal of Neurochemistry for $15/yr by filling out an online subscription form.

Instructions for Application for Membership

Applicants may apply:

    1. Complete the formal application form. Each application also must be endorsed by an Ordinary member of the Society. Endorsements should be submitted by email to the Chair of Membership Committee. Applicants who, for any reason, may find it impossible to obtain a sponsorship by an Ordinary Member may send their application with a cover letter explaining why securing a sponsorship is difficult for them. In those cases, the office of the Secretary will provide the required endorsement.

2. The completed application form together with either a current NIH Biosketch or a curriculum vitae should be emailed to the Chair of the Membership Committee (See Below). Any significant changes that occur after submitting the application should be communicated to the membership committee via the office of the Secretary of the Society. Such amendments will be accepted throughout the year.

    3. Letters of recommendation are not required, but they can be helpful in evaluating the applicant's qualifications. If the applicant anticipates questions regarding qualifications for membership, or independence as an investigator, then the applicant is advised to include an explanatory letter(s) from one or more persons in a position to provide useful information to the membership committee.

    4. Do not send dues. New members will be billed for dues after they are elected to membership.
